Once you battle your rival a second time you should be ok to trade. The only way we were able to trade was to pick a random code (1379) and just do it over and over again. Then just make sure if you are not close that you both have Nintendo Online and are connected to the internet. Clicking on the tiles and stuff like that did nothing for us.
